Confessions of a Design Fellow - Numero Uno

I can hardly believe it myself, but I now find myself one month into my Design Fellowship with AfH-Bogotá! It has been a large adjustment moving from Canada to Colombia, but I the people I have met here are very kind, the city is amazing and I am feeling settled into my new home.

I have loved being involved in the work at AfH-Bogotá. In my first month I have been collaborating with other members of our team to develop a corporate image for our chapter. It has been great creating a new logo and putting together a design manual; I am very grateful for the experience as I have learned a lot about the power of decision-making. Our website is currently in the works and should be up and running by the 1st of March.

Ricardo has been very kind to teach me a new design program, ArchiCAD. The program is fantastic!! I have been reading about the project Hogar Niños por un Nueva Planeta online on the Open Architecture Network for months so it has been a surreal experience to be contributing to the project via ArchiCAD during the past week.

My Design Fellowship began at the time of the earthquake in Haiti and the Rebuild efforts with Architecture for Humanity have been strong in the weeks following. The coming days are very exciting for us as we prepare for PechaKucha Night, Bogotá an event that will take place on the 20th of February as a part of Global PechaKucha Day for Haiti. I cannot wait to see the work of some of Colombia´s most talented designers in 20 images, 20 seconds.

Also this week, Ricardo and I went for a site visit to a school in the South of Bogotá. I loved seeing this part of the city and recording information about the site. The project is funded by the Corporación Juntos Construyendo Futuro and requires the design of 3 additional classrooms to accommodate the growing numbers of students. The project is very exciting for me; the type I could only dream of working on. It will certainly be very challenging and a lot of hard work, but a very valuable experience full of learning.

I have had a great time exploring the city of Bogotá and a few surrounding towns. The vibrancy, contrasts and sheer size of the city astounds me. I love taking the Transmilenio everyday, the colonial architecture and experimenting with the traditional foods of the region. And there is so much more to do and see!

The language barrier has been difficult to contend with at times, but I am determined and excited to improve my Spanish skills. I am planning to attend a Spanish for Foreigners class in the next few weeks.

It has been a pleasure getting to know and work together with the talented members of the AfH-Bogotá team. They are a group with a very diverse skill set but a common goal of improving the way people live through the built environment. I cannot thank the team enough for their warm welcome, patience and help.

That concludes my update at this time. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments at any time at Esta dirección electrónica esta protegida contra spam bots. Until next time, ¡Hasta Luego!
